High school athletes start the spring with strong performances
Big high school athlete performances start the spring strong. NBA and NHL playoffs begin. NFL Draft to begin.
Track, softball see big weeks
WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (WFHR / WIRI) – Local High School athletes continue to have strong springs, and the last week saw noteworthy performances.
In track and field, Assumption senior, Lucy Dolan set a new school record for the 800-meter run. She ran a time of two-minutes, 17.87- seconds, beating the old record set in 1980.
The former record was 2:19.2.
Her teammate, Bella Thomas, set a new record in the 400m dash with a time off 57.71- seconds, besting the former record from 2014 at 58.85- seconds.
Nekoosa softball pitcher, Raegen Wilhorn threw a perfect game for the Papermakers. They played Mauston on April 16, and won 15-0 in four innings of play where she struck out nine batters.

NBA, NHL Playoffs underway
It’s time for the playoffs in the NBA and NHL with the first round for both league under way.
In the NBA, the defending champion, Oklahoma City Thunder earned the No. 1 seed in the west with the Detroit Pistons being the top seed in the West.
For the NHL, The Colorado Avalanche and Las Vegas Golden Knights are the top seeds with the Buffalo Sabres and Carolina Hurricanes the top teams in the East.
NFL Draft begins
On Thursday, April 23, the annual NFL Draft will begin at 6:00pm in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The opening round of the draft will be held exclusively on Thursday with rounds two and three on Friday and rounds four through seven on Saturday.
The Las Vegas Raiders hold the No. 1 pick Detroit picking 17th, Minnesota 18th, Chicago 25th, and the Packers not in the first round due to the Micah Parsons trade with Dallas prior to last season.Green Bay’s first slated pick will be in round 2 with the 20th pick, as the Packers have eight total picks in this year’s draft prior to any potential trades.
