City of Eau Claire officials are calling on residents to share their thoughts on potential budget cuts over the coming months.

City officials say Eau Claire could face a $2.2 million budget deficit in 2027, largely due to reduced state funding and inflation. Even though the 2027 budget won’t go into effect for nearly a year, the City Council is already beginning to evaluate their options.

According to the City Manager’s report, the goal for the new budget amid these new financial constraints is to prevent staff layoffs and try to maintain City services more efficiently. A number of potential options have already been considered, including applying for State Innovation Funding, transferring some recreational facilities to community partners, and consolidating trash utility services.

City officials are also considering a proposal to implement more paid parking in residential neighborhoods and near city parks. That proposal was previously considered in November when the City Council voted to approve increasing the local vehicle registration fee, or wheel tax, from $24 to $50.

City officials acknowledged the additional financial strain the move would place on residents, but noted that increasing the wheel tax was one of the few tools they had to increase revenue while maintaining currently available services. The City Council also approved an amendment to sunset the higher wheel tax in 2028, hoping that the new state budget would bring in more revenue.

The Eau Claire City Council will meet again on March 9th, and officials are encouraging residents to attend and share their ideas for solving the projected budget deficit. City officials also plan to hold a series of town halls in the coming months to ensure residents can share their input on the potential solutions.
