The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr holiday is nearly here. It’s just over a week away on Monday, January 19.

Alderwoman Grace Johnson is organizing this year’s community celebration, which will involve a wreath-laying ceremony and performances from local students.

The theme, “Mission Possible,” builds on last year’s ceremony. Johnson says the goal is to build community and unity through nonviolence.

More schools to participate

More schools are expected to take part in the ceremony this year. Students from Gifford, Mitchell, Jerstad-Agerholm and Julian Thomas schools will participate in the laying of the wreath, reading works of Dr. King, and performing in the choir.

Details

  • The Laying of the Wreath will start at 10am on Monday, January 19 at 909 Dr. Martin Luther King Dr. outside the statue of him.
  • A program will follow indoors at 10:30am, at 1134 Dr. Martin Luther King Dr. at the King Community Center.
  • Schools participating this year include Jerstad-Agerholm, Julian Thomas, Mitchell School, and Gifford School.
  • Al Johnson and Grace Allen are Executive Coordinators of the event.
