MADISON, Wis. (CIVIC MEDIA) – Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul is running for re-election.

He announced Tuesday morning he wants to stay at his post.

“This is a pivotal time for our nation. Some of our most basic rights are under threat. Severe cuts have been made to programs that provide opportunities and have helped communities move forward. It’s critical that we continue to have an AG who will stand up for our freedoms and the rule of law,” said Kaul in a short statement.

“In Wisconsin, we’ve made meaningful progress, and we need to build on that progress. As my track record shows, I’m committed to working to protect public safety and to looking out for the interests of Wisconsinites,” said Kaul.

Kaul is mostly through his second term as the top law enforcement official in the state. He first beat then-attorney general Brad Schimel, and then Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney — both Republicans.

Toney is expected to join this race and run against Kaul in a rematch.
