Van Orden in Lancaster Discusses Tariffs
Addressing trade policy from President Donald Trump’s administration, Van Orden acknowledged the uncertainty Wisconsin farmers have experienced
LANCASTER, Wis (WRCO / WRCE) – U.S. Representative Derrick Van Orden highlighted federal agricultural policy during a visit Thursday (May 29) to Foremost Farms’ cheese plant in Lancaster. The visit came roughly a week after the U.S. House of Representatives passed a budget reconciliation package known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which includes several provisions impacting the dairy industry and broader agricultural policy. The bill now awaits consideration in the Senate.
Addressing trade policy from President Donald Trump’s administration, Van Orden acknowledged the uncertainty Wisconsin farmers have experienced but argued that tariffs are a necessary tool to secure better trade agreements for U.S. agricultural exports. He pointed to India, which imposes tariffs of 30% to 60% on imported dairy products, and Canada, which only allows tariff-free U.S. dairy imports up to a quota established in a 2018 trade deal.
