MADISON, Wis. (WMDX) – Dane County is again searching for a new director to lead the Department of Human Services after the county executive’s choice rescinded her acceptance.
The department hasn’t had a permanent leader for more than two years. Deputy Director Astra Iheukumere was named the interim director in 2022, and has remained there ever since.
County Executive Melissa Agard narrowed the search down to two candidates: Iheukumere, and Colorado hospital executive Amy Everett. Last month, Agard announced Everett was her pick.
Now, Agard announced Everett has rescinded her acceptance.
Everett said one meeting with a county board member felt more like an interrogation over her past employer than a welcoming discussion.
Agard says she’s disappointed in the county board, but will be expediting the search for the next leader.
That’s caused some bristling between the county executive and some county board members, who say the head of the Department of Human Services has got to be able to answer tough questions.
The department has 800 employees, and is the largest agency under Dane County government. It oversees everything from mental health programs to immigrant resources.
