MADISON, Wis. (Civic Media) — Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul has joined 14 other state attorneys general in a statement defending gender-affirming healthcare policies. It follows action from the White House.

The coalition argued that medical decisions should be made by patients and doctors, not politicians. They criticized a recent executive order they believe incorrectly restricts access to certain medical treatments.

The attorneys general said that gender-affirming care is a legitimate medical treatment and emphasized their intent to protect healthcare access where state laws permit. They noted a recent federal court decision that prevented the government from blocking funding to medical institutions providing these services.

The statement reads, “Despite what the Trump Administration has suggested, there is no connection between female genital mutilation and gender affirming care, and no federal law makes gender affirming care unlawful. President Trump can’t change that by Executive Order.”

Joining Kaul were attorneys general from states including Illinois, California, Colorado, Connecticut, and New York. The group said they would continue to enforce state laws protecting medical treatment options and challenge federal restrictions they consider inappropriate.
