Former state Sen. George Petak has died. He was 75 years old.
Petak, a Republican, represented the 21st Senate District of the state Senate from 1991 to 1996.
Petak’s vote in the mid-1990s proved critical in approving the public funding for the the building of Milwaukee Brewer’s current stadium, American Family Field (formerly known as Miller Park).
Later, Petak lost his seat in a recall election in 1996 when he was defeated by Democrat Kimberly Plache.
Gov. Tony Evers released a statement Tuesday afternoon acknowledging Petak’s service.
“Kathy and I join the people of Wisconsin in mourning the loss of Sen. Petak today,” Evers said in the statement. ” Gov. Evers said. “”Sen. Petak was a man of faith, courage, and principle. He truly had a servant’s heart, always leading with empathy and integrity to give back and do more for others. Kathy and I join the people of Wisconsin in mourning the loss of Sen. Petak and offer our sincerest sympathies to his wife, kids, loved ones, and the many whose lives he touched.”
