MADISON, Wis. (Civic Media) — Voting in Wisconsin requires an ID and there’s still time to get one if needed. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has outlined steps for voters to get identification for use at polling places.

State law mandates that voters show an ID, however the DMV says there is no separate “voter ID” and a federally compliant REAL ID is not necessary for voting purposes.

People looking for thier first Wisconsin ID should visit wisconsindmv.gov/idcards and apply at their nearest DMV office, bringing required documents. Appointments are optional.

For questions about obtaining an ID, voters can call the DMV’s toll-free hotline at (844) 588-1069. The Wisconsin Elections Commission website also provides information on voter eligibility, poll locations, and registration.
