LA CROSSE, Wis. (WLCX) – The La Crosse School District is holding two additional information sessions this summer after holding four sessions earlier this year to discuss its upcoming fall 2024 referendum.
The District is asking the community for a $53.5 million referendum to consolidate four elementary schools into two locations.
The two sessions will be done virtually, one on Tuesday, June 18 from 6 until 7 p.m. The other will be held on Wednesday, July 17 from 6 until 7 p.m.
District officials said that aging infrastructure and declining enrollment means that fewer facilities are needed for students.
Reducing the number of buildings to maintain also decreases the cost of regular upkeep and management.
With the plan, the number of elementary schools in the district would go from nine to seven. Emerson, Spence, and Hintgen will close. Students would then be divided between State Road and a new school at Hogan.
The plan would call for an estimated $40 per $100,000 of property value on taxes each year if the referendum passes this fall.
Of over 100 school referendums this past spring, just over half of them passed statewide, including proposals in Sparta and Westby.
